wedding wednesday: wedding q + a

Remember when I asked you guys a few weeks ago to ask questions, we'll I'm back for part two... wedding edition!

How did you meet your husband?

Tyler and I met in 2010 at the South Carolina/ Clemson football game in Clemson. I was going to the game with my friend Ruthie but staying with my friend Matthew. Matthew had been in PA with Tyler for thanksgiving to hunt and somehow they began talking about me. Matthew told me he had someone for me to meet at the game and tricked me into going to tailgate with Tyler and our friends from home. It was love at first sight! He graduated two weeks later and moved to Illinois six weeks later. A year later, then I moved to date him in the same city!
One of our first dates

I'd love for you to post about the wedding planning process (what you were glad you did, what you think looking back, etc.).

1.       Don’t buy a wedding planning book. Make your own three-ring binder. I never ever used mine and hate that I spent $35 on one when I could have made one that was much more organized for $10 like my mom did.

2.       My parents and I split what was important to us. For example, I wanted a band (instead of a DJ) and alcohol. My mom wanted the flowers done her way. My dad was in charge of what food we would serve.

3.       I wish we would have hired a videographer, especially for the reception. I’d love to hear the songs that the band played and see everyone dancing all over again. We taped the ceremony so I do have just the audio from it.

4.       There is so much leading up to the wedding and then it is over so quickly. I’d keep a journal if I did it all over again.

5.       Thankfully my mom and I never fought. We agreed to disagree and got over things easily. The only thing we got really upset about was printing the programs, but that would out of our control.

6.       Do things as early as possible. My mom and I relaxed all week long. Now my dad on the other hand was working like a dog with some of the guys who work for him getting beer delievered and making sure the reception was ready to go. Mom and I had everything ready, bows tied, presents wrapped, etc, all before the week-of. Never do that stuff last minute!

Favorite thing you 'just had to have' for your wedding or something that played a bigger role than you expected.

Like I mentioned I wish we had a videographer, but I was so thrilled with our photographer and her husband. They were both so engaging and worked the crowd great! Everyone was also raving over the band, Ascension. I’ve had people ask me who our band was because they want to use them for another event. They were worth every penny!

Totally random but just how many wedding have you gone to in the last year?

2013 weddings:

Mollie & Evan (I went)

Us

Catherine & Brian (we both went)

Eleanor & Adam (same day as above)

-and unofficially Shannon and Coleman (right Shannon!?!)

Rachel & CT (we went)

Bailey & John (same day as above)

Dan & Brittany (same day as above)

Caroline & Chris (I was MOH)

Ryann & Andrew (I went)

Ainsley & Webb (we were at the beach)

Anna & Will (Tyler was a groomsman)

Betsy & Stewart (November 23)
That's a lot!

What was the most memorable part of your wedding day?

The most memorable part was after my bridesmaids and I got ready. Somehow we started dancing with bongos and other music in the church’s music room. I think Stacey gets credit for this with slam poetry. It then turned into a dance party with music from the movie The Proposal, mine and Tyler’s favorite movie where Betty White is dancing in the woods chanting.

What do you think is different about being married, compared to before?

I don’t know who ever said marriage is easy, but they lied! It is hard work! There are so many stigmas about getting married and being the “perfect wife.” It is just not humanly possible to be perfect, and we all know that, but there is also room to strive for perfection. I want to cook a meat-and-three dinner every night that is healthy, but it can’t happen. I need to exercise for my mental and physical health and there isn’t time in the day to prepare an elaborate meal. I want to keep a perfectly clean house that is always tidy, but normally men aren’t tidy and our dog sheds an unbelievable amount! Laundry is constant and sometimes his work shirts have wrinkles (I do only buy non-iron shirts now for that reason!). Bills have to be paid (on time) and there is such a thing called a budget. We have student loans, car payments, and rent to pay. We can’t splurge all the time, but will occasionally. It is hard to schedule date nights, especially when you have weekend commitments almost every weekend. Sleeping in and breakfast in bed hasn’t happened since we’ve been married.

Before we were married, we had our own lives, sort of. Yes, we lived in the same place, but we had two places to clean, pay rent, and live in. We lived in a different state with different culture. We had an excuse to be independent and go to the grocery store alone or run errands alone or be apart. There is some pressure I feel being married that you have to be together 24/7 but that isn’t our personalities. I’m super independent and try to do my own thing here and there.

In a nutshell, there are similarities, but definitely differences. When you get married, two become one, and it isn’t just all about you anymore. You really have to consider your spouse because you are a family together. You make decisions together, you live together, you sleep together, and you go about life together!

Favorite and least favorite things about Tyler.

Favorite: Hardworking, funny, goofy, caring, likes to cook, enjoys the outdoors, loves my family and me, committed to strengthening our relationship always!

Least favorite: Early to bed, crunches ice, lacks patience (I'm guilty too!).

Most memorable date/trip?

Mquestion would be do you have any advice for couples in long distance relationships since you and Tyler did that?

Go visit fun places together, but also see what real life is like. In our first month of dating, we never really dated in one place. I was in SC and he was in PA and then IL. We went to NYC for New Years. I then moved to DC for a month for school and we played in DC for a weekend, then I finally got to go out to Illinois for a week inbetween my semesters. We really experienced real life, not just the fun stuff like a nice date in Manhattan! We also visited St. Louis together, but with another couple in their home so we could really relax together. Tyler spent a week at my parents house with me during my senior year spring break. After we got through all of this, I finally think "real life" sunk in and we realized all this traveling wasn't realistic in the future. While we like to travel, we also like Law and Order SVU marathons and Chinese takeout.

Also, when you were in Illinois was it hard to be away from your family and how did you manage your long distance "relationship" with them?

It was really hard to be away from my family, but much harder to be away from my friends. When my girlfriends would get together, I would get really sad. There are 12 of us who are super close and at one time they all got together (maybe for Homecoming) but it was too expensive for me to fly to SC. We did a lot of skyping and they followed my blog to keep up with me. I saw my family a lot, surprisingly. We also had a family of our own in Illinois who really took us in and made us feel like their children. My mom and I talked every morning on the way to work and every day on the way home.

He was approved by my best friends on week TWO of dating!
Thanks for your great questions, friends!

From Distance to Togetherness!!

Y'all-- check out my favorite Midwesterner, Stephanie!! Thanks, girl!!

Hello! I'm Stephanie from the Midwest Prep. I'm so pleased to be guest blogging on Charlotte's blog, she is so so darling. As she is enjoying her life as a newlywed, you're stuck with me for today. ;)

First of all, can we just discuss that Charlotte is MARRIED?!??! [Well she will be when this posts ;)] I know she's had quite the stressful past few months with moving back out East (even though I'm still a little bitter she left the midwest before I could meet her!!) and planning her wedding so she deserves all the happiness in the world.

Anyways, I figured I mine as well talk about love while Mrs. Law is out celebrating her marriage on her honeymoon. As some of you may know, my boyfriend and I have been long distance for six years now. I'll save you the whole back story and just fast forward to where we are at right now. WE'RE MOVING IN TOGETHER. Exciting I know?! Let alone, we're moving to a whole new city.

So some of you out there may be long distance lovers, new love interests, recent newlyweds, or even married + happy for years. I need advice from all of you. Seeing as Matthew and I have never really lived together, please share your tips with me. What do I need to know about moving in with a man?

Here's what I'm going to expect to change or occur..

1. Privacy - A lot of things that were once mine, will be ours. I hate to admit but I'm kind of a selfish person. I'm interested to see how I'll be with sharing my things and just my space with Matthew.

2. Sacrifice + Compromise- This is pretty cut and dry but it applies to a lot of things. We both have our own way of living and we do particular things a certain way. We will have to learn to give and take. Or just the small sacrifice of giving up my Sunday night shows so he can watch football. It's the little things. ;) But I'm ready for it.

3. Growing - I expect Matthew and I will both grow as individuals and as a couple. We've never lived in the city for more than a summer so I think our relationship is in for a few (good) changes. Plus it's about time Matthew puts a ring on my finger.. I mean it's been six years. JUST KIDDING.. kind of. ;)

4. Disagreements - Every couple has them. You'd be lying if you said you didn't. Matthew and I have had some pretty awful fights in our day although we haven't had a serious fight in at least a year. We've become so good at being long distance though. It'll be weird living in such close quarters with him. I don't want to say I'm expecting us to disagree but I know we won't agree on everything. The important thing is to never go to bed mad at one another. :)

5. Memories - Last (and most important) is that I think Matthew and I will make so many great memories. We will have so much more time together to just relax and be a couple. Plus we will have a whole new city to explore so that will be fun in itself. :)

So feel free to share advice, tips, or even your story with me! I'd love to hear about it. :)

Thanks again Charlotte for letting me invading your blog and don't forget to follow my blog, twitter + instagram

Week 1: DOWN!

Can you believe I moved here ONE week ago? Geez, where has the time gone?

I'm still trying to get into the swing of things and am so very grateful for all of the sweet messages I have been getting from friends (and new blog friends). Thanks, y'all!

After I get settled, I will be more fun to read about, I'm sure. For now, here are some pictures from the past week. I thought I took more than this, but I guess not? A couple I am working on to make a "I've Moved" card, but that is taking longer than expected. Today also marks 1 week until my birthday. Who doesn't love a birthday?

And the photo dump begins...

Flowers I had waiting on my dresser on Thursday from Ty (or Wednesday.. days are running together)...

Friday: Lunch at this pretty famous Amish restaurant

Whoopie pies (kind of taste like cupcakes)- Amish speciality. These were PUMPKIN flavored. OMG so good!

Sweet boyfriend before entertaining guests!

Mom really did come with me....

Saturday: going to "run" Sarge in the cornfield

Isn't he adorable? And SOOO well trained. Tyler loves his pup!

My plant from my friend Kendall! She is just so darn thoughtful! (Call me back, Ken!!)

Shot #1 of my room. Still need to get cable up and going (which is my responsibility but I've never had to do that before so I'm a little lost...)

Room shot #2: Bedside table #1

That's all for now! I promise to get other pictures up when my room is more put together. Need to get these pillows to come to my doorstep asap!

Thanks for reading!

ITS OFFICIAL!!!! Long Distance No More!

Yesterday, I accepted a JOB in ILLINOIS!

Here is the short version:

I move November 1.

I start work November 7.

I will be a professional agricultural recruiter (headhunter) for Rich Connell Agri-Search!

I AM SO EXCITEDDDDDD! (Ok, scared of out my mind, but PUMPED)

I already have a roommate and apartment... Yay!

I will be living 5 minutes away from Tyler in Tuscola.

Everything just fell together. Seriously, God has listened to my prayers, my madness, my anxieties, my struggles, and now I know He will guide me through this real transition.

I had no idea that when I created this blog that this would all happen so fast, but it did!

AHHHHH!!!!!

Look what my sweet best friend sent me as a congratulations:

Seriously, Rebecca is the best!

Long version:

I have been working with a "headhunter" to help me get a job in IL since June. I have been applying to jobs in IL since January. After my interview in June, my (soon to be) boss said he had a special feeling about me. We didn't have any luck placing me with a company and I just kind of held on and waited. The last time I went to visit Tyler in September, I went to my boss's home to meet his wife and family because it is a small family business with awesome values. That interview was more about "me" rather than my 5 freaking internships and business stuff. He told me he was looking to hire some more people in the business. I asked if I could learn more about the company so last week I went to shadow him for the whole day and by 5:30 he offered me a job!

Do you see why I have been so stressed out all week? I didn't know what to do... All of my friends and family (well almost all of my friends are here) live in South Carolina. I wasn't ready to be a big girl and grow up and move halfway across the country. After a weekend of overwhelment (sorry for my new word) and some tears, pro-con lists, laughing, crying more, and thinking and PRAYING, I made the decision to take it. This is what I have been waiting for! Close to Tyler, a fulltime job (particularly in ag), Ah! Perfect. I slept on it a couple of days and took it yesterday. I kind of started telling people yesterday, but now I can let the world know!

PLEASE keep me in your prayers. Nov 1 is going to be here before I know it and I have SOOOO much to do before then. Until I get packing, I have lots going on at my internship (guess I will call it that now since I have a real job!). Stay tuned!

I'm really off to the land of CORN from the land of COTTON! Ah!!!

Off we go!

Hello and welcome to my blog! I have been toying with the idea of a blog for a couple of months now, and finally decided to take a leap of faith and begin one. Bear with me because this can either be a huge success or a catastrophe (I tend to talk too much). I wanted to have a way to document my travels, experiences, and thoughts to those who live in the blog world or just to anyone who is willing and able to listen to me vent and offer words of wisdom during the "transition period" of my life.

For those of you who do not know what is going on in my life here is a brief recap:
  • I graduated from Wofford in May with a degree in environmental studies aka how to save the planet one water bottle and farmers market at a time. I'm kidding, obviously, but those of you who followed me through college can get a giggle of out this.
  • I am interning at the SC Dept of Agriculture as a marketing intern in international trade. This is my third summer here (first time going on fall- exciting!). I am very passionate about agriculture and work with our Certified SC Grown program.
  • I met the most wonderful guy last November, hence the reason for the title of my blog. His name is Tyler and if you haven't met him, you need to do that the next time I can drag him down South. He lives in Tuscola, Illinois (about the size of St. Matthews for all of you Calhoun County people) and works as a grain buyer for Cargill. Though we share a lot of things, we both share a love of ag. I can't even begin to tell you how things in my life changed when I met him! It has been a fun, fun ride! More later I'm sure.
  • As scary as it is for some of my friends to hear this, I have learned how to cook during my spare time this summer. Yes, me, cook. WEIRD. This little doo-daddy website called Pinterest has opened me up to the "fun" of cooking and baking. I also must give credit to my dear friend Virginia who loves to bake and taught me that baking is a great stress-reliever! It's true- it is.
  • Other than that, I like to run in the tiny town of Cameron occasionally (do not let me fool you that I am any good at it), am a member of a girls' Bible study, hunt when I want to be girlfriend of the year, pretend to online shop, and love on my little white diva named Lily. I cheer for Wofford (no matter who they play), Carolina (when I am with Rebecca and Tripp), and Clemson (when I am with my brother or Tyler). I guess I am not a true loyal fan to any team other than Wofford. And when Clemson plays Carolina, I'm just going to wear my pink, be neutral, and hug Tyler (we met at the Clemson-Carolina game last fall).

I guess this gives you a little insight on the life of Charlotte. Post-graduation has been a whirlwind and as I start making some big decisions in life, I'm sure it will continue! I'm not going to bore you with those details quite yet! Maybe this shouldn't be a blog, but more of a "ramblings" site. Hope you decide to follow me, support me, encourage me, and laugh at me during my "transition" journey.

And if you are interested, here is a picture recap from my post-grad summer!
